Freedom is one of our highest values, but are you really free?
Of course we think of ourselves as free - we enjoy more freedom than any other nation on earth. We have enjoyed more property than any other nation, more access to education, nutrition, opportunity, and recreation. As Americans, we might say that we are more in control of our destiny than nearly any other people on the face of the earth - ever. But is that all that freedom is?
We also have the highest percentage of alcohol and drug use disorders of any other nation, the highest occurrence of divorce, the highest incidence of cancer, the highest occurrence of death from eating disorders, and are among the highest when it comes to the prevalence of anxiety disorders. Does that sound free? Not to me!
Jesus said,
"If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!" (John 8:36)
The Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the Church in Galatia that we call the "Book of Galatians" in the New Testament. They were struggling with freedom on a spiritual level because were abandoning their freedom. Paul wrote, "It was for freedom that Christ has set you free." (Gal 5:1) So what exactly is this freedom in Christ and how do we experience it?
